Turquoise waters, sapphire skies, platinum sands, emerald palms. Immerse yourself in Greater Fort Lauderdale, with 23 miles of palm-fringed Florida. Culture, nature, shopping at places like the famous Ron Jon's Surf Shop, dining at restaurants like the delicious Cafe Europa and nightlife at the well-known Blue Martini - you'll find it all in Greater Fort Lauderdale.
Water is a defining element of Greater Fort Lauderdale, framed on the east by the majestic Atlantic, and bordered on the west by the exotic Everglades, a one-of-a-kind ecosystem teeming with spectacular flora and fauna and home to the Seminole Indians. Between the two, the Inter-coastal Waterway and a canal system reminiscent of Venice winds gently through the interior, connecting world-class boutiques, galleries like the New River Art Gallery and restaurants with museums such as the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, theaters and nightspots.
A major beneficiary is Las Olas Boulevard, a shopping street once moribund after 5 PM, which has reinvented itself as a hot venue, with a mix of trendy shops. Even more restaurants have sprung up, and both visitors and locals often make an evening of strolling the boulevard. On street parking on weekends has slowed traffic, providing more of a village feel. Farther west, along New River, is evidence of Fort Lauderdale's cultural renaissance: the Arts and Entertainment District and its crown jewel, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Still farther west, in the community of Sunrise, is the BankAtlantic Center, serving as the county's major-league sports and concert venue and as home arena for the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers. You could stay at one of Fort Lauderdale's finest hotel accommodations and travel to and from the Panther games locally!
Festivals and fairs, sporting events and parades, on land and on water and in the air - there's always something fun to do in Greater Fort Lauderdale. A Mecca for the avid sportsperson, the area features endless fun at the Carolina Golf Club (just one of the 40 courses in the area), miles of wilderness trails for hiking and biking, unsurpassed snorkeling, diving and deep sea fishing, and premier thoroughbred horseracing at Gulf stream Park. Of course, a captivating shoreline with wide ribbons of sand for beachcombing and sunbathing is what continues to make Fort Lauderdale and Broward County a major draw.
